The city of Northampton was originally inhabited by natives of the Pocumtuc tribes. It was settled by Dutch traders in the 1630s and its petition for township was granted in 1653. The settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony faced conflicts in the form of illness and territorial disputes, but the area grew steadily into a thriving town. By the time the American Revolution had concluded, Northampton had a population of over 5,000 with a strong economy.
In the year 1842, Northampton became home to the “Northampton Association of Education and Industry,” which was a group of abolitionists focused on equality for all. Former slave and advocate for equality, Sojourner Truth, lived in this community until it was dissolved in 1846. Northampton was officially incorporated as a city in 1884. It continued to grow through the 20th century until the 1950s when it was greatly affected by the Rust Belt Phenomenon. The decline hit its lowest in the 1970s. From there, Northampton began to rebuild and thrive once more as a cultural hub and tourist destination. It remains a popular destination today for residents and visitors alike.
